Professional Office Work Employment Readiness (POWER)
|
|
A 2-week self-discovery and employment preparation program assists clients identify and evaluate skills and interests as well as update job search skills. Clients must demonstrate a willingness to participate in a group setting for 2-weeks in a structured classroom based program.

Computer Lab
|
In our self-directed computer lab, we have 15 up-to-date computers used to upgrade & evaluate skills as well as to perform job search activities. Each computer is equipped with MS Office 2003, Windows XP operating system, interactive training and testing programs for today’s most popular programs, the latest version of Typing Master and Internet access.
Skills Upgrading & Evaluation:Interactive, in-depth tutorials simulate programs and lead you step-by-step through each concept. You are working on your own and at your own pace to upgrade your skills to the next level.
Tutorials include:
- MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access)
- Accounting Packages (ACCPAC, QuickBooks, Simply Accounting)
- Typing & data entry
- Web Design: Dreamweaver and Front Page
Interactive testing software simulates programs to evaluate your competency in the following programs and areas:
- MS Office
- Accounting
- Vocabulary – Business, General
- Spelling and Grammar
- Medical and Legal Terminology
- Call Centre and Customer Service
- Data Entry and Typing

Resource Centre
|
The Resource Centre is a comfortable, quiet environment with print and audio-visual materials on occupations, training and educational programs, the labour market and employers. There is access to a photocopier, the Internet, phones for job search, and local faxing. Clients are invited to bring their lunch, enjoy the unobstructed view we have from the 17th floor to Lake Ontario and take a break between job search activities.
Job Search ToolsAll of these job search tools are available in the Resource Centre:
- A Job Board that is updated daily
- Photocopier, Fax machines, computers for Internet access and telephones – all available to be used for job search
- Books with sample resumes and cover letters for many different job titles and circumstances
- Books on job search techniques, networking and interview techniques
- Videos demonstrating how to interview successfully, how to contact potential employers and how to network
- Business, government, and community directories with information about potential employers
- Daily newspapers: The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and the Toronto Sun
Research TopicsThe Resource Centre is the perfect place for job seekers to do research. The shelves are stocked with valuable information:
- Occupational Binders – More than 400 occupations are listed with details about salary, training requirements and working conditions
- Current Labour Market information including publications with trend forecasts, analysis of the impact of technological change and descriptions of skills currently in demand
- There are books on career planning, descriptions of occupations appropriate to specific areas of interest, formal education and temperament
- There are current publications on legal and work issues
- There is a section on personal growth
- An entire book case is dedicated to information on training and education

Program Eligibility
|
- Office workers with experience and/or training related to the administrative field
- Grade 10 English (ESL Level 5)
- A minimum of basic computer skills
- Unemployed or working less than 20 hours per week

How to Register
|
|
Register with OWCC by attending an Orientation session, to book a session, call us or e-mail or fax your resume to reception@officeworkers.org or 416-925-4621 and you will receive a call within 24 hours to book a session.
Orientation sessions are held every Tuesday from 2:00pm - 4:30pm. The session includes a detailed presentation on our Programs & Services, a tour of our Resource Centre and a hands-on introduction to our Computer Lab.
